Over 100 travel journalists and content creators from all over the UK and Ireland gathered in Glasgow this week for a three-day event which showcased many highlights of the city’s visitor experience.
Media Getaway 2024 offered attendees an opportunity to visit a wide range of Glasgow attractions – including The Burrell Collection, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, The National Piping Centre, Mackintosh at The Willow, and The Clydeside Distillery.
The delegates – who were officially welcomed to Glasgow by the Lord Provost at a civic reception on Monday – also had the chance to join guided themed tours of the city and enjoy Glasgow nightlife at evening events which included a ceilidh.
In addition to enabling travel editors, writers, freelancers, and bloggers to find out about the wealth of things to see and do in Glasgow – so they can share information, recommendations and suggestions through their channels – Media Getaway helped them connect with almost 100 travel trade and tourism industry PR representatives from all over the world. The event’s formal and informal networking opportunities, both in-person and online, included just under 1200 pre-scheduled meetings.
Organised by Travel Connection Group – and hosted jointly by Glasgow Life, Glasgow Convention Bureau, and the Radisson Blu hotel – this was Media Getaway’s third and biggest event. It built on the momentum and success of the inaugural edition, held in 2022 in Manchester, and last year’s in Leeds, both of which were very well received by travel media and industry attendees alike, as well as the cities’ tourism and marketing teams.
Glasgow Life Director of Culture, Tourism and Events, Billy Garrett, said: “This week’s Media Getaway provided an invaluable opportunity for Glasgow Life’s destination marketing team to not only highlight – to key target audiences – the city’s strengths as a sustainable and accessible destination but also its tourism strategy, ambitions and aspirations.”
Travel Connection Group Managing Director, Howard Salinger, said: “We couldn’t have asked for better partners for our Media Getaway 2024 and have had huge support from all the Glasgow teams involved in the event. It really has been a superb success; our delegates enjoyed a brilliant visit to the city and great Glaswegian hospitality.”
